An Intro to My Medium Journey

All the stories I’ve written and my favorite stories I’ve read here

Yes, I’m the guy who wears shorts in the winter

Hey, It’s me Sebastian. I recently (October 2021) wrote my 100th story here on Medium. And it only took me 5 years, yay me! I know this is small potatoes for a lot of writers on the platform, but as a full time paper shuffler, writing doesn’t come as easy for me anymore. So to celebrate, I wanted to put together a list (or 15) that have all my favorite stories in this platform. And my own stories #ShamelessSelfPromotion. Oh, and short bio too I guess:

I’m from Bolivia (born in Sucre, raised in Santa Cruz) but have lived in the U.S. for the past 11ish years (first in Kansas, now in Utah). My girlfriend and I just bought our first house this year, in a suburb of Salt Lake City, but soon enough we’ll have to share this small space with our daughter. So much for trying to write more.

Since you are doing me the favor of reading about me, this is obviously not going to be a metered story. But most, if not all, the stories in these lists are behind a paywall. If you are not a Medium member yet, you can become a member here. Full disclosure, while I think it is totally worth joining, as you’ll see below, you should know that I’ll earn a couple of bucks if you use that link. Anyhow, here are some lists:

My writing

Non-fiction

The most all encompassing category. I mostly write about popular culture and media, or tips on personal finance. Sometimes I write down a few of my opinions about politics and the society we live in for good measure. Opinions: everybody’s got one, right?

Essays on Society

7 stories

Finance and Economics

4 stories

Humor

Wanna hear something funny? I’ve fooled Slackjaw — the biggest comedy publication on Medium — into thinking I’m somewhat funny. Multiple times. And I have published some other funnies in other great pubs in here. These have all been really fun to write, and hope they’re at least a bit fun to read.

Fiction

As a kid, I always wanted to be a writer, and for me that always meant writing the next Great Novel. I am… still working on that. But on Medium I’ve been able to strengthen my muscles with the short story format. I have published a lot less fiction lately — Medium seems to hate the genre — but it is still my passion. And one of my favorite places here, to read and write fiction, has always been The Weekly Knob (now known as Hinged), a great publication built on the precept of connecting people through story.

Poetry

Poetry is not as hard to write as people think. Writing good poetry on the other hand, is so much harder than people think. Of all the things I write, I don’t claim to be any good at this one. But it is a beautiful artform.

Reading lists

I read a lot on Medium. If starting tomorrow I stopped writing forever, I would keep paying my $50 a year to read all the great stuff one can find here. Of course, as an open platform, there’s plenty of crap. But there is plenty of fantastic stories too.

I won’t be writing an intro to each of these lists (there are a lot and I’m a lazy writer), so I hope the titles are descriptive enough. Also, some (but only a few) of these stories may be repeated in a couple of lists because they fit more than one category.

Society and Politics

Self

Environment and Climate Change

Technology

Business and Economics

Media and Pop Culture

Fiction

Humor

Health and Fitness

Writing and Reading

Science & Other Disciplines
